For a couple of years now, I’ve made it a holiday tradition to craft and gift handmade paper decorations. One of my favorites have been the paper snowflakes which are always a treat for my guests whenever they come by for Christmas. So I’m sharing today an easy paper snowflake quilling tutorial to inspire and hopefully motivate you to make your own handmade decorations.

Give your Christmas tree a unique touch with an easy to craft paper ornament

What you will need to make this 6-pointed paper snowflake

One of the reasons I love working with paper and the quilling technique is that it is affordable and easy to achieve beautiful, eye-catching designs. Here’s what you will need to make your own paper quilling snowflake ornament.

Step 1: prepare your center

My 6-pointed paper snowflake ornament has at its center a flower created from 6 double tear-shaped forms. Each tear is formed from two paper strips, rolled in a loose coil, bent at the middle, and glued at the tips.

In total you will need 12 paper strips to create 6 double tear-shaped forms.

To form the center, just apply center on the sides of the tears and join them together. You might need to apply some pressure before the tacky glue sticks to all the elements.

Step 2: Prepare the rays

The exterior layer of this paper snowflake ornament is formed from 12 individual marquis (or eye) shapes, glued together in pairs of two.

You will need one paper strip to create a marquis shape. To create one, roll a paper strip into a loose coil, then use your fingers to press the coil at its ends to give it its pointy design.

Glue two marquis shapes at one of their ends to create a V shape.

You will need to create 12 marquis shapes, each rolled from one paper strip.

Step 3: Roll the Tight Coils

This is the easiest part of this snowflake quilling tutorial. Just take one paper strip and roll it tight. You will need 6 individual tight coils, each created with one paper strip.

Step 4: Putting it all together

The final step is always the best part of any DIY project. By now you should have a center (flower crafted from 6 double tear shapes), 6 V-shapes and 6 tight coils.

Start by adding glue to the exterior tips of the V-shapes and attach them to your center flower. Repeat until you finish the process.

When you are done, add glue to the tight coils and add them in between the V-shapes.

You should end up with a form that looks something likes this.

If your paper snowflake doesn’t look perfect from the first try, relax. Snowflakes are all unique, and when you give them a close look, not all of them are perfect. Also, remember that with any handmade crafts, practice makes perfect. I’ve been using quilling as a way to craft with paper for 10 yrs now, and my first designs always tend to look a bit sloppy.
