There’s great potential for Pinterest to become a strong source of traffic, leads and sales for brands and content creators. Pins have a longer shelf life than Facebook or Instagram posts, and Pinners are using this channel for planning, inspiration and purchasing. In fact, 48% of Pinners come to Pinterest just to find and shop for products.

For content creators, success on this channel comes from a mix of factors, but one of the top three is designing beautiful pins. That just happens to be one of the reasons that a lot of brands and content creators are missing out on this channel’s potential.

Why is that?

First, Pinterest likes to see constant pins, which means that you need to put something out there every single day.

Second, Pinners like to see beautiful pins, that appeal to their unique style and vision of the world. If you have a brand book and a customer avatar, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Third, if you’re going to pin at least 5 times a day, that ranks up your total number of pins at 150 pins per month. A minimum. Industry recommendations say somewhere between 15 to 20 pins per day is a good number.

So that leaves you with a couple of options:

  • Option A: hire a graphic designer.

  • Option B: learn how to do it yourself.

  • Option C: use a tool that makes creating beautiful pins easy and fast, without being a designer and without wasting hours every month.

I’ve done graphic design for brands who wanted to tap into the traffic potential that Pinterest has. If you’re on a tight budget, then this might not be for you.

Learning to do it yourself is an awesome skill to develop. However, it’s also something that takes a lot of time, and as a business owner there’s so much to do that investing dozens of hours every month just to create pin design might not be the best use of your time. It took me years to develop this skill, and it is still a work in progress. This means spending time learning about design best practices, color theory, UX, as well as what works on Pinterest.

If you don’t have the budget to invest in working with a designer, or the time to learn how to do it all from scratch, this leaves you with option C.

Which I love because it gives you access to proven templates, numerous variants to choose from, easy personalization features, and all without investing more than one hour per week (or at least that’s my case).

Introducing… Tailwind Create

how to create beautiful pins - without being a designer

This tool is part of the Tailwind experience and it allows you to tap into numerous versions of pin designs, customize them to match your style and brand, then schedule them straight to your Pinterest account.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to create beautiful and unique pins using Tailwind Create:

1. Go to your website, or blog, and copy the URL to the post/page that you want to create pins for

2. Login to your Tailwind for Pinterest account, navigate the left menu, until you find the tab “New”, click it to open your Tailwind Create dashboard.

There are three different Tailwind Create plans, each designed to better serve your needs. The entry level allows you to create 30 Pin Designs / month and gives you access to features such as free stock photos, basic design elements, multi-photo designs, drag & drop editing tools.

If you are already a Tailwind user, you can lock in a special 50% launch discount (valid until Jan 31st), which you can use on any higher tier Create plan.

If you don’t have a Tailwind account, you can create a free one using this link. With the free account you can schedule up to 100 pins or 30 Instagram posts.

3. You can set up your brand preferences at this step.

4. Click to start a new design. This opens the pin creation dashboard, which looks like this:

5. Paste your page/blog post link into the field that says “destination link”. The tool is going to automatically pull data from your link, such as the title (which is the headline of the page/post), and photos.

6. Once your data is in, you need to select the photos that you want to use to populate your multiple pin designs. You have three options: choose from the site photos (populated automatically), search for stock photos, or manually upload photos that you’d like to use. Select your favorite images and then click “Create images”.

7. In the next window you will see multiple variants of pins created with your selected images, your page’s/post’s headline as text overlay, and your brand colors.

8. Go through these initial options and select the ones that you like best, or that match your brand best. You can also use the filters in the right upper corner to refine your selection by niche/industry, pin and content types.

9. Once you have selected your favorites you can also customize them. I suggest you select a max of 5 pin variants with the same headline and image. Very similar pins create a poor experience for your followers, and can result in lower distribution or being flagged for spam.

Click the “try on different looks” button under the pin design to change colors, layout, and the photos. In the left panel you will also be able to change the font to match what your brand fonts.

You can also click Edit and that allows you to edit everything on that design.

Once you are happy with your selection, click to “Schedule”
