If you want to progress your career, increase your earning potential, make a real impact, or be seen as an authority in your industry, then you need to take steps to progress and excel in the business world.

You might want this progression, but unless you take active steps forward to make it happen, you will only remain where you are.

It requires a lot of time, consistency, patience, and motivation. You may need to develop skills that are highly valuable and sought after in the industry, always remaining up-to- date in the market, crafting innovative ideas, seeking out opportunities, and much, much more.

To help you on your journey, here are some foundational things you need to be able to position yourself in your market and excel.

Set goals and create a plan

First and foremost, you need to have a clear goal in mind and combine this with a structured and detailed plan of action. This will help you know what you are aiming for and provide you with a clear path to achieving it. A plan should start with your “why”. Think about your core values and where you want to be. Think about what this will look like in 5-10 years’ time, and craft your long-term vision. A SWOT analysis – Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats can really help you create a solid plan. Using this information, you should craft SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Gather your current evidence

It is an excellent idea to start to gather evidence of your skills, experience, and accomplishments to help you advance your career. This will help you to build a solid portfolio that you can build on as you work through your milestones to reach your goals. It can also help you to identify gaps that you need to focus on filling along your journey. Make sure you share and shout about your experience, so people know what you are capable of.

Continue to learn

You must always be learning and growing, regardless of your current status or industry. This should include personal development as well as knowledge relating to your industry.

It may be that you have to take an internship so you can learn a new skill and gain invaluable experience. This kind of investment in yourself and your career can go an extremely long way. However, in some cases, you may need to consider relocating temporarily if you require specialist skills and experience. This will mean not only looking for an internship, but also short term housing. You must be willing to make these investments.

Cultivate the right mindset

To advance your career in the business world, you need to have a strong mindset founded in growth. You need to have the right perspective and outlook on business, be able to think strategically, and turn your ideas into actionable steps. Your mindset needs to go beyond your mind and enable you to take action in the real world, where you navigate complexities with ease and turn challenges into opportunities.

Progressing your career in the business world is not easy, but these top tips will help you to create a solid foundation for yourself.
